From Sept 2010 to April 2011, 3 friends & I moved into a Welsh wood, to build a temporary dwelling, & see through the winter.
I wanted to learn about the other side to the nomadic tradition - staying still. So we built a home, a kitchen and a loo, and table and chairs galore. We had no power tools, and used no nails, screws or glue in our constructions. We made a bicycle generator for electricity, baked sourdough bread every day, wooded like mad for warmth, and drank water from the local stream. We made hazel hurdles, a yurt, and countless baskets.
It was hard going. Staying still is much trickier than moving on. That winter the temp fell to -18. Thank goodness we had so much work to do!
